Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Accumulator
- An accumulator is a type of parlay where the winnings from each winning selection are reinvested into the next, multiplying potential payouts.
- Arbitrage
- Arbitrage, or ‘arbing’, is exploiting differing odds across sportsbooks to guarantee a profit regardless of the result.
- Asian Handicap
- Asian handicap gives a team a positive or negative goal advantage to eliminate the draw outcome, offering two possible winning selections.
- Bankroll
- Your bankroll is the total amount of money you set aside for betting, separate from everyday finances.
- Cash Out
- Cash out allows you to settle a bet before the event ends, locking in a profit or limiting a loss based on current odds.
- Cover
- Cover refers to a favorite winning by more points than the spread, allowing spread bettors to win.
- Edge
- Edge is the perceived advantage a bettor believes they have over the sportsbook’s odds on a particular outcome.
- Fade
- To fade is to bet against a popular pick or a known bettor’s selection.
- Futures
- A futures bet is a wager placed on an event that will be decided in the future, such as who wins the World Cup.
- In-Play
- In-play betting, also called live betting, lets you place wagers on match events after the game has already started.
- Juice
- Juice, also called vigorish, is the commission a sportsbook charges for taking a bet, reflected in the odds.
- Line
- The line is the set of odds or point spread offered for a particular bet on an event.
- Moneyline
- A moneyline is a straight bet on which team will win a match, with odds expressed as a positive or negative number.
- Odds
- Odds indicate how likely an outcome is and determine how much you can win relative to your stake.
- Outright
- An outright bet is a wager on the overall winner of a tournament or league, rather than a single match.
- Over/Under
- An over/under bet predicts whether the total combined score of both teams will be higher or lower than a set number.
- Parlay
- A parlay combines multiple selections into a single wager, and all of them must win for the bet to pay out.
- Point Spread
- A point spread assigns a handicap to the favored team to level the betting field, requiring them to win by a certain margin.
- Push
- A push happens when a bet ends in a tie with the spread or total, resulting in the stake being refunded.
- Sportsbook
- A sportsbook is a platform, either online or in a shop, that accepts bets on sporting events and sets odds.
- Stake
- The stake is the amount of money you risk on a bet.
- Steam
- Steam describes rapid, widespread movement of odds, often caused by heavy betting action on one side.
- Unit
- A unit is a standard measurement of bet size, usually representing a small percentage of your bankroll to manage risk.
- Value Bet
- A value bet occurs when the odds offered by a sportsbook are higher than the true probability of the outcome, giving you an expected profit.
